It’s here! In The Heights! The Tony Award-winning musical made its debut in 2008 with Lin-Manuel Miranda in the cast and now its in theaters for everyone to enjoy.
The story takes place in my home town New York City, in the Washington Heights neighborhood. The story honors the diverse Latin communities of Upper Manhattan. Even though the story takes place uptown as an immigrant Latina growing up in Brooklyn I related to every part of this film.
The story begins with Unasvi de la Vega ( Anthony Ramos) telling the story of Washington Heights to a group of kids sitting on a picturesque tropical beach. The story hits many points on how life can be as a Latino working hard to then go back to our countries. I love that the film depicts that not all of us go back but because some of us have made the states our new home. Dreamers dreaming of a better life. Dreaming of new opportunities. Its the little details That tell the world we are not invisible.
Movie is in theaters today June 10 and on HBOmax on June 11
